Hiking through the heat of hell – the walk

Day 77-12 Miles today feet from launch shelters to CANTERA-2,200 gap gap shelters, feet up, 1,800 feet from below in total 1,163 to miles

Bougie refuge

The fall shelters had two small shelters to snore one so as not to snore. He had a picnic table outside and another picnic table with a roof covered on it. There were two lands behind both shelters.

The private was one of the best I’ve seen along the way. It was a bit comic with a bell at the front and a light switch inside. There is no electricity, it is only for exhibition. There were two springs and a babbling stream right in the shelter.

This stinks

It was supposed to be a spectacular view. We were so waiting for us to arrive because we had heard a lot about the Max patch. But that day was anything but spectacular about the weather. By the time we reach the top of Max Patch, ice and rain and cold, we are unbearable. It was then that the calls to Dark, who made her scream «this stinks.»

Many hundred miles later, several states later, several months later, and «this stinks.» I can see why people have difficulties with Pennsylvania. I think that much of that has to do with the fact that the novelty of the walk has disappeared.Hiking through the heat of hell – the walk

Many people have also abandoned. Many people are scattered along the way. It is more like work and that fun at this time. Especially with temperatures in the 90 high.

Childhood

I think it is even deeper for me to return in Pennsylvania. A state that grew in part of my life. I found myself looking at the many Penylvania roads that we crossed yesterday and thinking about how they look like roads on my paper route when I was 10 years delivering newspapers by bicycle.

I only made 8 miles yesterday and this morning my ankle hurts. It’s worrying. I plan to do 12 miles today and started early to reach the path at 7:00 am

The first climb is steep at 700 feet in one mile. I am glad to be doing this climb early in the morning. It would be miserable around noon when the temperature is climbing.

I reached the top of the chimney rocks at a rate of almost 2 miles per hour. That refreshed my soul. With a backpack loaded and 700 feet per mile, I could maintain a healthy rhythm climbing through this mountain.

Critical note

It is already hot and bustling. The forests here are a good mixture of hard woods, pines and sprurates. It is an open forest with little weeds on the forest floor. The views are a green tunnel (without view) but not a laurel tunnel and surroundings plus a green open forest tunnel. I know there are excellent views on both sides of this crest where I am traveling because I can see partial views periodically.

There are many road crosses in this AT section. I crossed Rocky Mountain Road and made a small climb to Rocky Mountain shelters.

When I climbed, I looked towards the back of a small pine and I saw some oak leaves stuck just a few inches from earth to the tree bark. I took the red pin and noticed a piece of plastic that wrapped a note secured by a paper clip. I could see a small writing in the newspaper and knew that he had found one of those cryptic notes on which he had read.

A view with a surprise

I saw a rocky cut that seemed that I had a good view, so I stepped on and took a picture. I looked down only a few meters from me there was a rolled copper head. I quickly backed away.

I had been looking for snakes all day and once again, when I take my eyes where I go, there is a snake.

Apparently, Rocksylvania really starts in mile 1190 about 110 miles from here, but most today the path has been rocky. Quite easy to go through but rocky, where you have to be attentive. There were also rock sections that definitely contained snakes. I was very attentive to these rock sections. There were many holes that easily had snakes that occupied them somewhere in their depth.

Hostel?

It was at approximately half a mile at the Delicatessen store and then another half mile to the shelter. I started walking along the way to the shelter, but it was only 1:00, so I decided to continue on the path. The path continued along a channel. There was rododendro with flowers with beautiful pink and white flowers.

When I arrived at Caledonia’s State Park, Ozark and his mother, they were taking a nap of heat. I had a picnic table with a lot of fresh fruit, some meat cecina and some cheese. I took off my shoes and took a nap enjoying a little magic of trails.

The climb of the Caledonia State Park was a fairly difficult climb with many steps, especially with heat. I was a little worried about being overheated. When I approached the shelters of the quarry gap, the path entered a rododendro green tunnel to the shelter.
