Cristiano Ronaldo will attempt to play in a record sixth World Cup when Portugal take on Ireland in their qualifier at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Friday.

Earlier this week the 40-year-old striker, who has more than 950 club and international goals, said next year’s FIFA World Cup would be his last as he wraps up one of the greatest careers of all time.

The closest he came to lifting the trophy was in 2006, when Portugal lost to France in the semi-finals.

How can Portugal qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup during this international period?

Portugal currently lead the qualifying group with 10 points from four matches, five ahead of second-place Hungary. Ireland and Armenia are third and fourth with four and three points each.

Portugal can qualify for next year’s main tournament with a win against Ireland. If the match ends in a draw, Hungary will have to drop points against Armenia before Portugal can qualify.
