The 40-year-old was far from his best, however, as he missed from the spot late in the match, but was saved from his blushes after Ruben Neves scored a winner in the opening minute of extra time.

The win against Ireland helped Portugal maintain its perfect record in the qualifying match and moved them to the top of the standings with nine points.

Portugal can book its place at next year’s World Cup in the US, Canada and Mexico if it beats Hungary on Wednesday and Armenia drops points against Ireland.
