Belgium has selected Youri Tielemans as a captain, where coach Rudi Garcia opts for the midfielder of Aston Villa about various more experienced players in the team.
After the appointment of Garcia earlier this year, he rotated the captain when he said he was looking for the right leader for the team, but on Wednesday announced that the 28-year-old would take the lead.
«Youri Tielemans will be our permanent captain,» Garcia told a press conference on the eve of Thursday’s qualifying match in Liechtenstein.
“We have turned the captain’s bracelet for a long time, but now the decision has been made.
«He has a good relationship with everyone in the group. He enjoys unanimity within the group. Although other boys remain important leaders, such as Kevin De Bruyne, Thibaut Courtois, Romelu Lukaku … but you get the bracelet.»
Tielemans said he considered the appointment as an honor.
«There are few things more beautiful in a career than this. There were five names, and I am the chosen ones. It would have made no difference to me. I will always be the same. I am proud, that’s for sure, but it won’t change my personality.»
