IFL 2025-26: Aizawl comes from behind to win against Chanmari in Mizo Derby

Aizawl FC staged a stunning second-half comeback to overturn a two-goal deficit and secure a thrilling 3-2 win over Chanmari FC in the Mizo Derby of the 2025-26 Indian Football League at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Aizawl on Tuesday.

Goals from Malsawmsanga Renthlei and Jota had put Chanmari into a commanding 2-0 lead at half-time, but Vincent Lalduhawma’s goal and a brace from Laldawngzuala sealed all three points for the People’s Club in a pulsating encounter.

The win moved Aizawl (temporarily) into second place with eight points from five games, while Chanmari remained seventh with five points. Laldawngzuala was named Player of the Match.

Aizawl head coach R. Lalruatfela has given starts to two foreign players for the first time this season, with Colombian defender Rodriguez Luis Angel and Uzbek midfielder Tumur Talipov. Chanmari coach Victor Lalbiakmawia made three changes, including starts for Emmanuel Badu and Malsawmsanga Renthlei.

Chanmari started brightly and took the lead in the 18th minute thanks to a lucky effort from Renthlei, whose skipped cross slid past goalkeeper Vanlalhriatpuia. The visitor doubled their lead just before half-time, with Jota converting from the penalty spot after Aron Vanlalrinchhana had made a mistake in the penalty area.

Aizawl responded soon after the restart, with Lalduhawma taking advantage of a defensive struggle to make it 2-1. The momentum quickly changed as substitute Laldawngzuala scored twice in three minutes (both headers) to complete the turnaround.

Chanmari pressed for an equalizer late on and created several chances, but Aizawl’s defense held firm, with Vanlalhriatpuia producing a crucial stoppage-time save to seal a memorable derby victory.
