Gokulam Kerala FC survived a late battle from Aizawl FC to score a 4-2 win to end their home season on a high at the Payyanad Stadium on Tuesday.
Gokulam were 3-0 ahead when Aizawl struck twice in quick succession (88th and 89th) to inject last-minute excitement into the match. However, Gokulam withstood a barrage of attacks from Aizawl in the 10-minute stoppage time and grabbed the decisive fourth goal through captain Rahul Raj (90+7).
Gokulam’s coach, Dimitris Dimitriou, made five changes to the squad. However, it was regulars Trijoy Dias and Rahul Raj who combined to give Gokulam the lead in the second minute. Trijoy fired into the Aizawl box from the left and his back cut was tapped in by Rahul. The host doubled the lead in the fourth minute. Rahul then turned provider for Trijoy, who scored with a left-footed strike. Thabisco Brown underlined Gokulam’s dominance by heading in the third goal in the 33rd minute after a cross from Moses Lalrinzuala.
Gokulam was a bit grumpy in the second half and failed to translate his ball possession into goals. However, the North East side woke up in the third quarter and rattled Gokulam with quick turnovers. An errant clearance from a Gokulam defender allowed the ball to reach Malsawmzuala Tlangte, who unleashed a long ranger from 20 yards to reduce the margin in the 88th minute. A minute later, Zomuansanga headed in the second goal for the visitors. In injury time. Gokulam strengthened its defense and Rahul Raj scored his second goal to give his side a much-needed win.
The result:
Gokulam Kerala FC 4 (Rahul Raj 2, 90+7, Trijoy Dias 4, Thabisco Brown 33) defeated Aizawl FC 2 (88, Zomuansanga 89).
