The Indian women’s football team climbed seven places to 63 in the latest FIFA rankings, after it defeated Thailand to qualify for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup.
It is the highest rank for the Blue Tigresses in almost two years, when it was arranged in 61st place on August 21, 2023.
India defeated Thailand 2-1 in the Asian Cup qualifications and made for the first time for the qualification in the tournament on merit.
The side, forced to withdraw from the last edition of the tournament, at home, started the qualifying campaign with a 13-0 win over Mongolia and then received the Beter from Timor Leste and Iraq with margins from 4-0 and 5-0 respectively.
It all came down to the last match against the Thais, which had an identical points count. It was Sangita Basfore who stepped into that game to get a brace and power India to the final of the Asian Cup.
