India is eligible for AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 after beating a higher ranked Thailand

The Indian national team qualified for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 after beating Thailand 2-1 in a decisive qualification on Saturday.

Midfielder Sangita Basfore played with a brace for the blue tiger rings.

«I first want to congratulate my team. It is because of them that I was able to score these two goals. A big thank you to the coaching staff,» Sangita said after the game.

«Our target is the World Cup. We will watch that,» she added. «I also want to thank the fans and our families for supporting us.»

India played eight times in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup, but it had never achieved the continental event via the qualifying route. In 2003 the Blue Tigresses had played in the tournament, but qualifications did not yet exist.

In 2022 they qualified because they are the hosts.

The AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 will also serve as a qualifying match for the FIFA World Cup Brazil 2027.
