Iran FIFA World Cup 2026 preview – Team Melli wants to bring chaos to glory

Iran arrives with experience, structure and an ambition: to finally get past the group stage. It has been close before, especially in 2018 and 2022, but the step to the knockouts remained out of reach.

This group gives the Ghalenoei side a possible route, but only if it starts well. The opener against New Zealand in Los Angeles is the match that Iran must win.

Three points there would give the country control before facing Belgium and turn the final group match against Egypt in Seattle into a potential qualifying shoot-out. Anything less would haunt it.

On the field, Iran is unlikely to be expansionist for any length of time. The strength lies in compact defense, physical duels in midfield and quick deployment in attack. Taremi is still the main point of reference, and Sardar Azmoun’s absence from the team conversation has increased the onus on him. Jahanbakhsh, Ghoddos and Mohebi will have to provide support and creativity around him.

The concern is whether Iran has enough ingenuity if forced to chase a game.

Against Belgium it can sit deep and counter. The country may have to show more initiative against New Zealand and Egypt. Hopes for a knockout will depend on how well the country handles that shift.

Player to watch out for: Mehdi Taremi

Taremi gives Iran experience, movement and composure in the final third. He can operate as a centre-forward or link attacks from deeper areas. In a group where margins can be slim, his finishing could decide whether Iran reaches the knockouts.

Administrator: Amir Ghalenoei

Ghalenoei knows the high expectations surrounding Iran. His side is built around experience and tournament knowledge. The challenge will be to make the country proactive enough against New Zealand and Egypt, while maintaining the defensive structure needed to contain Belgium.

Iran’s predicted team (4-3-3):

Alireza Beiranvand; Ramin Rezaeian, Hossein Kanaani, Shojae Khalilzadeh, Milad Mohammadi; Saeid Ezatolahi, Saman Ghoddos, Rouzbeh Cheshmi; Alireza Jahanbakhsh, Mehdi Taremi, Mohammad Mohebi.
