The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has written to twelve clubs from the Indian Super League (ISL) seeking their views on Churchill Brothers’ possible entry into the competition.
While the AIFF Executive Committee had on February 12 rejected the I-League side’s inclusion in the top division, the issue is once again under discussion following FC Goa and Sporting Club Delhi’s letter to the federation on February 13, urging the federation to reconsider.
“The emails record that the above-mentioned clubs have no objection in principle to the participation of Churchill Brothers FC Goa in the current ISL season, while recognizing that the matter is currently before the courts of the Swiss Federal Tribunal (“SFT”) and any decision must be subject to the outcome of the said proceedings,” read AIFF’s letter to the remaining 12 ISL clubs, excluding FC Goa and SC Delhi.
“The email from Sporting Club Delhi further states that it does not oppose the proposal that the competition may be conducted with an increased number of participating clubs, provided that all additional operational costs attributable to such expansion will be borne solely by Churchill Brothers FC Goa.
“In accordance with the above and in accordance with the principles of good governance, transparency and the integrity of the competition, AIFF hereby seeks the considered views of the other participating clubs on the matters outlined above,” AIFF said.
Churchill Brothers had provisionally finished at the top of the I-League rankings after the last match day of last season. However, second-placed Inter Kashi, which had four points deducted by the AIFF appeals committee – a decision that would otherwise have made it champions – challenged the sanction at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and ultimately obtained a judgment in its favour.
As a result, Kashi, instead of Churchill, was crowned I-League champion and earned promotion to the ISL rfv5.
The postponed ISL season started on February 14 with two rounds already completed.
