Mohun Bagan Super Giant will look to build on its promising start to the season when it hosts former champions Chennaiyin FC in its second match of the Indian Super League at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Monday.
Mohun Bagan started their campaign under new head coach Sergio Lobera, opening with a 2-0 win over Kerala Blasters. With the ISL being played in a truncated single round-robin format, each match carries added significance, making home matches crucial for the defending champions as they look to build early momentum.
Chennaiyin FC, meanwhile, are heading into their second consecutive away match after a single-goal defeat to Mumbai City. The visitor will be eager to bounce back and reach his safe points.

Lobera, who enjoyed considerable success during his tenure as Mumbai City’s head coach, stressed the importance of consistency after the opening win. “Starting the season with a win was crucial, but the goal now is to be consistent. It is essential that we make our home ground a difficult place for any team to visit. That is our main goal this season,” said Lobera.
Warning against complacency, he added: «Chennaiyin has a new team this season. We have a fully focused side but the next match is always unpredictable. That is why we have to be positive and play aggressively. We have to make sure we don’t drop our intensity from the first whistle against a highly competitive Chennaiyin side.»
Chennaiyin FC, now coached by Clifford Miranda, have put together a revamped squad aiming to turn things around after a string of disappointing seasons. Miranda, who previously worked as an assistant coach at several ISL clubs including Mohun Bagan, emphasized that reputation will not determine the outcome.
«Mohun Bagan is one of the best clubs in the country when it comes to resources and professionalism. But football is played in the moment and it is fluid. They are now under a different coach, they play in a different way, and there are no secrets in modern football. What matters is how we perform on the field,» Miranda said.
The Chennaiyin coach praised his side’s response after their opening setback and expressed confidence in their mentality. «The reaction of my players after the defeat was absolutely fantastic. Even in the dressing room and in training, the attitude was perfect. They are a perfect example of professionalism and character. It is not easy to immediately come back at full speed after a long break for the season. My players give everything in difficult circumstances. At the moment I have no complaints, only appreciation for their commitment and spirit,» he added.
With both sides keen to make an early statement in a shortened season, Monday’s clash promises to be a hard-fought match. While Mohun Bagan will look to capitalize on their momentum and home advantage, Chennaiyin FC will be determined to come back strong and set the stage for an intense battle at the iconic Salt Lake Stadium.
