Jamal Musiala on the verge of comeback after months of injury: Bayern coach Kompany

Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala could be included in the squad for Saturday’s Bundesliga match against RB Leipzig after an absence of almost seven months due to a broken leg and ankle, coach Vincent Kompany said on Friday.

The 22-year-old Germany international, a key player for the national team’s 2026 World Cup hopes, suffered a fractured fibula with a broken and dislocated ankle after colliding with then Paris St. Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma during their Club World Cup match in early July last year.

To that point he had had a fantastic season, with 21 goals and eight assists in all competitions as Bayern won the Bundesliga title.

“If everything goes well today, the intention is that he will be there,” Kompany told a press conference.

Despite Musiala’s absence, the Bundesliga leader has been firing on all cylinders this season. Wednesday’s 3-1 win over Cologne set a new record for the first half of the competition, with Bayern on 47 points and a goal difference of +53. The previous best figure after 17 games was for Pep Guardiola’s Bayern from the 2013/14 season, also with 47 points but a goal difference of +35. The 66 goal tally at this stage is also a new league record.

“It is clear that Jamal gets a lot of positive energy from this dark tunnel,” said Kompany. «Then even the little things feel great. I tell my players never to forget this feeling of coming back. You appreciate everything more. Jamal has that now.»

Kompany said Musiala and Alphonso Davies, who are fit again, would not be put under pressure to perform immediately as they return to action after their absence.

«I don’t expect them to decide games for us. I want good integration with good performances and at some point be at 100 percent. Maybe not the level of before, but take that next step,» Kompany said.

Bayern hosts Union Sint-Gillis in the Champions League on Wednesday.
