Jarell Quansah joins Leverkusen from Liverpool after winning under 21 euros with England

Bayer Leverkusen announced on Wednesday that the former Captain Jonathan Tah has replaced by Jarell Quansah from Liverpool in a club record for a defender.

The 22-year-old Quansah signed a contract until June 2030 and will wear the former number 4 shirt of Tah, said the Bundesliga club on Wednesday.

Quansah won the European championship under 21 with England last week. But he was unable to settle as a regular starter in Liverpool for Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté.

The reported reimbursement of more than 30 million euros ($ 35.3 million) rose to 40 million ($ 47 million) with bonuses roughly corresponds to what Liverpool agrees to pay Leverkusen for the Netherlands, Jeremie Frimpong in May.

According to reports, Liverpool has obtained a brid-back option for the English defender for more than 60 million euros ($ 70.6 million) after he spent two seasons in Leverkusen.

Lastkusen also sold star player Florian Wirtz to Liverpool for a Bundesliga record compensation last month.

Tah switched to the Bayern Munich competition match as soon as the season ended after he refused to extend his contract. He had spent a decade in Leverkusen and was an important part of the team that won the Bundesliga and German cup unbeaten in 2023-24.

«One of the most promising English central defenders. He is quickly, Agile, a good football player,» said Leverkusen -sports director Simon Rolfes about Quansah.

«He has already had an impressive impact in a Liverpool defense dominated by players of World Class. With Jarell our defense gets considerable dynamics, pace and toughness in tackling, and he is again a very important building block.»

Rolfes supervises enormous changes at Leverkusen after the departure of coach Xabi Alonso for Real Madrid.

Wirtz, Tah and Frimpong have all left and Rolfes has drawn promising young players to make up for the departure.
