JMT August 9: Red’s Meadow Back to Mammoth Lakes
Sometimes the path decides for you. We had moved well, miles by clicking every day, but a stubborn lesion can convert the thrust forward into a complete stop. The gigantic lakes became our unplanned scale, a place to rest, heal and reorganize the plan.
We left early to overcome the heat of the afternoon, ready for another day of hiking in the impressive mountains of Sierra Nevada. We had slept well in cold temperatures during the night, lulled by the sound of a nearby stream.
A painful turn to Reds Meadow

A few miles towards Lake Virginia, I found Catie sitting next to the path with her shoe while she and Kim examined her foot. His new shoes were defective: a piece of plastic in the heel rubbed raw skin. The pain was bad and every step hurt.
We had just started the day, thousands still ahead, but instead of moving forward, we turned to Reds Meadow. From there, we take the bus to Mammoth to discover our next movement. Irritation had already caused bursitis, and the walk even more only worsened it.
Life out of trail in gigantic lakes

In Mammoth, we registered in the Shilo Inn, then we headed to Kitredge Sports for new sneakers. Life outside of Trail had its advantages: cold drinks from Rite Aid, a cafe stop for «in the clouds» matcha and frozen coffee. Catie rested her foot while we replied. If we wanted to end in time, we would have to omit our vvr resignation.
We are supplied in vons, enough food to finish the trip without another stop. The plan: gathers the path on Piute Pass, a five -mile walk, perfect, or that sounded. We would be jumping from 10 to 15 miles, but that was fine for us: we have uploaded this section in 2022 and we knew the route well.
Back at the hotel, we shower, we wash our clothes and have dinner in a small coffee. Vinduces full, cleaning the clothes and the repaired equipment, we could already feel the pull of the path. Tomorrow we would change our soft beds by the rock paths, the buzzing of traffic for the babbling of a stream and the comfort of the city for the unknown wild who waits beyond the passage of Piute. I can’t wait!
