Jose Molina will part ways with Mohun Bagan after exiting the Super Cup

Mohun Bagan Super Giant is set to part ways with head coach Jose Molina, a day after the team exited the Super Cup following a goalless draw against arch-rivals East Bengal on Friday.

Molina, who was appointed head coach ahead of the 2024-25 Indian Super League (ISL) season, departs after leading the Mariners to a historic double, clinching both the League Shield and ISL Cup – only the second team to do so; the first is Mumbai City FC.

After the Kolkata derby, Molina spoke to the club management, without naming any individuals, about the summer’s transfer transactions.

«Every time we play against teams with foreign midfielders, we don’t control possession and have to defend too much. I tried to sign a foreign midfielder but it was impossible,» he said at the press conference.

Bagan have had a difficult season so far, being eliminated by East Bengal in both the Durand Cup and Super Cup. Bagan was also disqualified from the continental tournament after refusing to travel to Iran for the AFC Champions League 2 match against Sepahan, sparking protests from the fan clubs.

«The pressure is my friend, you know. I have lived with the pressure from a very young age, when I started playing. It is part of my life,» Molina said at the press conference.

“The problem is that when I’m home there’s no pressure,” hinting at his departure.

Molina previously managed Atletico de Kolkata and led the now-defunct side to the ISL title in 2016. Between 2018 and 2022, he was technical director of the Spanish Football Association, succeeding Fernando Hierro.

Molina had taken over the reins at MBSG following the departure of Antonio Lopez Habas.
