Jose Mourinho returns to Portugal after more than 20 years, because Benfica Reunion is confirmed


José Mourinho will coach again in Portugal two decades later.

Benfica said on Thursday that it had reached a deal with Mourinho, so that he sealed his return to the country 21 years after he led rival Porto to the UEFA Champions League title in 2004.

Mourinho started his coaching career at Benfica in 2000, but only lasted three months before he left a contract conflict.

He will return to the UEFA Champions League after an absence of five years, because a turn of the 16 years in 2020 was coaching Tottenham. Mourinho also won the Champions League with Inter Milan in 2010.

He won the third doctrine UEFA Conference League with Roma in 2022, but his time at the Italian club of 2021-24 was characterized by arguments that appeared in his short and chaotic spell with Fenerbahce in Turkey.

His Stint with Fenerbahce came to an end last month after the Turkish club was eliminated by Benfica in a qualifying play -off of the Champions League.

Benfica fired coach Bruno Lage on Wednesday, one day after the 3-2 home loss of the team for Qarabag in the Champions League. Benfica wasted a lead of two goals for his fans.

Club president Rui Costa has dismissed the recently poor results with reference to poor results. Benfica attracted 10-man Santa Clara 1-1 in the Portuguese League last Friday.

Benfica’s next game is in the Portuguese League at AVS on Saturday. The next Champions League match is on September 30 in Chelsea.
