Kobbie Mainoo is confronted with an uncertain future at Manchester United after manager Ruben Amorim revealed that the midfielder competes with Captain Bruno Fernandes for a place in the team.
England International Mainoo has to appear before United this season and misses both the defeat of Arsenal and the 1-1 draw on Fulham.
The 20-year-old was overlooked by Amorim in Craven Cottage when United chased the victory after Fulham’s Emile Smith Rowe had canceled Rodrigo Muniz’s own goal that the visitors had given the lead.
When Amorim Casemiro replaced by new striker Benjamin Sesko, he moved Mason Mount, who started from the front, back to midfield.
Portuguese boss Amorim then replaced Mount by Manuel Ugarte before he turned to defenders Harry Maguire and Ayden Heaven looking for a winner.
Fernandes tanned a fine of the first half, but his place as regular remains of the first team, with a competition cup performance against Grimsby on Wednesday apparently the best mainoo that can hope in the short term.
«He is now fighting with Bruno,» said Amorim. “I have changed two midfielders. I love Mason Mount there because we want to score a goal.
“And when I changed it, I felt that the team had to return to a midfielder.
«So he just has to fight for the position with Bruno in training. As if it should be at Manchester United.»
