What makes sense, since I slept for 12 hours. My stomach also feels normal again, which is a relief. I take it easy in the morning. It is still raining a little, so breakfast, coffee and leo until it stops. The search and rescue helicopter passes over again. I am not sure what is happening, but I only continue with that.
After boiling a little more water and pack, return to the path. I have about 4 miles (7 km) until I connect to the Arctic Circle Trail (Act). Sometimes there is not much trace, but it is quite easy, except for humid and muddy sections. But that is Greenland: wet feet every day. That’s why I prefer trail runners.
Dramatic/picturesque beginning of the day.
Who ate this reindeer …?
After 1 mile, I find many bones scattered through a small area, with a little meat and fur still in them. The reindeers really do not have natural predators in Greenland, since their territory generally does not overlap with that of polar bears. Its main predator is a hunter.
Finding a bone, a skull or antlers is not unusual, but this many bones … was it here where the polar bear passed? A spooky thought. They never found the polar bear whose impressions were detected a few weeks ago. Thoughts persist: What would you do if I met one? Does it make me big and noisy? Or get away in silence? From what I read, both seem valid options, but I would prefer not to try either.
There were more, it extended even more …
Long living trust
The path is still marked with few «trust» markers. I am getting used to it, although sometimes I finish too far and I need to go back or climb steep shortcuts. Then, the Roda fog, making navigation a bit more difficult.
I get to an steep descent section where the paths of paths are difficult to see. Going out is a mixture of GPS and common sense. Once down, there is a walked mile along a lake, without a path, unequal land, but at least there is no way to get lost. It is not the most inspiring section, but the lake is huge, and finally: fresh and tasty water!
Join the path of the Arctic Circle
On the gravel road, I officially connect to Arctic Circle Trail. It is nice to walk through firm land after both soft land. While I make a lunch late, I know two girls who have just finished the path. They confirm what I expected: muddy and humid, but beautiful. We talked for a while before they go in search of a well -deserved shower.
After a little bean stew, it’s time to keep moving. This year (2025) they opened an ATV track of Kangerlussuaq to Sisimiut. The ATV act and track are mostly separated but cross several times. If you want to avoid some wet sections, you can follow the ATV track, but decide to continue with the act. Outside the road and towards the path soaked and covered with weed I go 😊. I understand why some hikers prefer the ATV track after days of wet earth: I can feel the same in the end. But for now, I am motivated and fresh!
The big difference with the Arctic Circle Trail and the KanggerusSuaq Ridge Trail, is that it has a real path: less GPS, more viewed.
The path of the Arctic Circle! Now I’m really on my way!
Rend art installation
Not far, I find a «installation» of reindeer antlers.
I have questions!
- Who created this «art piece»?
- Where the antlers found in the area or did someone brought them here?
- How long did it take?
- Should it contribute?
After admiring art, I continue. Soon I arrive at a small crossing of streams. It seems quite easy, until my foot sinks into sticky clay to the ankle. There is enough clay in that area, but it has not been a problem walking. Until now. Very sticky! Then, I find a lake a little below to rinse my shoes.
Just water in this current, only sticky clay.
Lighten load strategies
I am tired and ready to lighten my load. There is no option to replenish along the path, so it starts with a heavy package full of food, at least 7 days of value, although it really should bring more in case of delays. I started in Kangerlussuaq with approximately 8-9 days of food. Then there is the eternal struggle. What to eat first? What I feel, or what is heavier …
I find a good place to camp (you are allowed to camp everywhere in Greenland, so it is generally not a problem), prepared to spend the night and enjoy tranquility. Some mosquitoes, but in general, they are not bad!
There are not many distance markers along the path, so it is exciting when you see one 😉
