La Liga 2025-26: Alvarez Double Sparks Atletico Comeback to Stun Real Madrid 5-2


Julian Alvarez scored twice when Atletico Madrid came from behind to Thrash City Real Madrid 5-2 in a pulsating derby on Saturday that the LaLiga leader handed his first loss after a perfect start to the season.

The exciting meeting in a raw Metropolitano stadium, with nearly 70,000 fans on the edge of their seats, saw Atletico fight back from 2-1 to claim a memorable victory that increased it to fourth place with 12 points. Real Madrid stays on top of Laliga with 18 points, two for Barcelona with a match in hand.

The aggressive start of Atletico has paid off when Robin le Normand opened the score with a header in the 14th minute, but Kylian Mbappe burst by to the level with an unstopping rise up close in a fast counter in the 25th minute. Arda Guller delivered a volley of a Vinicius JR Kruis 11 minutes later to put the visitor in front.

The header of Alexander Sorloth in added time before the break atletico gave a boost and it was given the lead five minutes in the second half when Alvarez converted a penalty after Guler’s high boot was cut rival Nico Gonzalez on the face in the box.

After Alvarez had expanded his lead in the 64th minute with a sublime free kick in the top corner, Antoine Griezmann sealed the victory in a fast counter in extra time.
