Despite the debut of most of his new signing sessions, Atletico Madrid could not prevent him from admitting two late goals and had lost the opening match of the Spanish competition for the first time under coach Diego Simeone.
The 2-1 victory of host Espanyol on Sunday was the first opening of Atletico since Simeone took over the end of 2011. It had never lost an opening competition since 2009.
Simeone started the game with five of the new signing sessions of the club for the season – álex Baena, Thiago Almada, Johnny Cardoso, David Hancko and Matteo Ruggeri. Giacomo Raspadori also made his debut from the bank in the second half.
Atletico took the lead with the free kick of Julán Alvarez in the 37th minute, but gave goals from Miguel Rubio in the 73rd and Pere Milla in the 84th.

«It happens,» said Simeone. «The result hurts, but it will let us improve and grow. I have left with all the good things that the team did.»
Last season, Atletico only lost a competition match twice that led it.
«We played a very good first half and we had the game under control in the second,» said Atletico -midfielder Koke. «But after their first goal, they turned things around.»

With transfer rumors in the past, Nico Williams Athletic Bilbao led to a 3-2 victory over Seville in the opening match of the Spanish league.
Williams, who was associated with a move to Barcelona in the low season, but seems to stay at his boy’s club, has made the hosts ahead by converting a 36th minute of penalty kick.
Athletic, who came from a fourth -placed finish last season, added to the lead with a goal by Maroan Sannadi in the 43rd before Sevilla gathered with goals from Dodi Lukebakio in the 60th and Lucien Agoume in the 72nd.
Robert Navarro placed athletic back forever by scoring in the 81st.
Goalkeeper Unai Simon helped the hosts to safeguard the victory while Sevilla went ahead to the end.
It was the first match of Athletic with Iñaki Williams, the older brother of Nico Williams, as main captain – a first for a black player in the club that traditionally only promotes players from the Northern Basque Country or AREG areas of Spain.
Getafe stepped over a 2-0 win at Celta Vigo with the second half of goals from Adrián Liso and Christantus Uche.
Madrid’s club had an exhausted team after he was unable to register many of his new players because of the regulations for financial fair play.
It was a disappointing start for Celta after a season in which it ended in European places.
On Friday, Rayo Vallecano won 3-1 and Villarreal won promoted Oviedo with 2-0.
