La Liga 2025-26: Lewandowski will remember his first goal at the new Camp Nou ‘forever’

Barcelona forward Robert Lewandowski said he will remember the first goal at the team’s rebuilt Camp Nou stadium «forever» after a 4-0 win over Athletic Bilbao in La Liga on Saturday.

The experienced striker opened the scoring after four minutes, ensuring Barcelona’s inauguration celebrations could begin after two and a half years playing away from their home stadium.

Barcelona planned to reopen Camp Nou a year ago, but the date was postponed several times due to construction issues and other issues.

«Today was a special day, not only for me but for everyone. That’s why I’m very happy that I could score the first goal when I returned to Camp Nou,» Lewandowski told Barca One.

«I have so much experience playing in different stadiums, but here is something special. I am very proud of myself and also of the team because we did great today and we won.»

“I think for me this first goal is something I will remember forever.”

The win moved Barcelona level on points with Real Madrid at the top of La Liga and was an improvement on the team’s recent performances.

“I already felt two, three days ago, when I came back from the national team to the club, I felt special emotions, that something special (is going to happen),” Lewandowski continued.

“We all know this game will be something we remember in the long run.”

Barca coach Hansi Flick praised the former Bayern Munich striker.

“He’s a player who, when he has a chance, it’s normal to score almost 100 percent (of the time),” Flick told reporters.

“It was very important today that we score very early, because that gives us the confidence we need.”

About 45,000 fans filled the three open stands, while the third tier of the stadium was still under construction. The project should be completed in 2027, a year later than originally planned.
