La Liga 2025-26: Real Madrid’s Alonso unsure about Mbappé’s absence

Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso admitted on Saturday that he does not know how long injured superstar Kylian Mbappé will be sidelined.

The French striker was diagnosed with a knee injury on Wednesday, which is expected to keep him out of action for at least three weeks.

«We will try to make it happen quickly; it depends a lot on how he feels, but we will try to get him back as soon as possible,» Alonso told a news conference.

«When is it as soon as possible? That’s the question. I don’t know.»

The coach said he hopes Mbappe will be back to take part in the Spanish Super Cup, with Los Blancos taking on rivals Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals on January 8.

Mbappe, 27, is Madrid’s top scorer with 29 goals in all competitions in 24 games this season.

Alonso will be without the striker for Sunday’s La Liga match against Real Betis at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Madrid is four points behind leaders Barcelona, while the Catalans visit city rivals Espanyol on Saturday.

Alonso came under intense pressure in December due to Madrid’s inconsistent form, with his future still uncertain in the coming weeks.

One bright spot has been Brazilian striker Rodrygo, who came into form at the end of 2025, and Alonso wants him to continue in the same vein.

«He played some really good games at the end of the year… we need him like everyone else,» Alonso said.

«To make up for Kylian’s absence, we have several options, and Rodrygo is one of them.»
