La Liga: Fan held on after racial insults of Kylian Mbappe during the Oviedo game


The Spanish police have held a fan who is accused of racial insults of Kylian Mbappe during a La Liga match last month.

The police said on Wednesday that the fan was taken in custody after he was identified during an investigation launched after an official complaint by the Spanish League.

The police said that the fan, who was not publicly identified, was accused of making monkeys and sounds for the Real Madrid star.

The insults arrived late in the first half of Madrid’s 3-0 victory in Oviedo on 24 August, after Mbappe scored the first goal.

In recent years there have been a series of racist insults from fans against black players in Spain.

Last week an Espanyol fan accused of racially offensive athletic Bilbao in Azaki Williams during a La Liga match five years ago a deal to prevent prison time.

In May, five Valladolid fans who racially insulted Real Madrid attacker Vinicius Junior in 2022 were found guilty in the first statement in Spain who condemned racist insults in a football stadium as a hate crime.

Last year, three Valencia fans were given eight months in prison for arguing for racial insulting Vinícius in what the first conviction was for racism-related matters not based on a hate crime-in professional football in Spain.
