La Liga: Mbappé scores again to send Real top in nail-biting 1-0 win at Getafe

Kylian Mbappe continued his impressive run of goals. His tenth goal in nine league games gave Real Madrid a 1-0 win at Getafe on Sunday and sent his side back to the top of the LaLiga in a match where the hosts finished with nine men.

Real struggled to find a way past a stubborn Getafe until Allan Nyom was sent off thirteen minutes from time, one minute after coming off the bench, and Mbappé scored three minutes later.

Alex Sancris was then sent off before time for a second booking.

Real are on 24 points, two ahead of Barcelona, and the top two will face off in next Sunday’s El Clasico. Getafe is 12th in the standings with 11 points.

Real coach Xabi Alonso continued his practice of rotating the starting squad, leaving both Vinicius Jr. as Arda Guler remained on the bench while Jude Bellingham and Rodrygo handed rare starts.

The match started with both sets of players standing still for 15 seconds, part of a protest organized by the Spanish Football Federation over LaLiga’s decision to play December’s match between Villarreal and Barcelona in the United States.

In reality it took even longer for the match to get going.

MBAPPE’S THREAT

Mbappe was a constant threat in the first half, taking his side into the opposition area, but his own teammates often seemed to be operating on different wavelengths.

Aurelien Tchouameni’s long shot went narrowly over and just before half time, David Alaba’s powerful free kick was parried by the keeper, after which Federico Valverde’s follow-up attempt was far off target.

Getafe kept Real at bay for most of the first half, but Sancris struck narrowly wide shortly before half-time and fired a warning shot.

With Real unable to get closer to the net, Vinicius replaced the unimpressive Franco Mastantuono ten minutes after the break and Guler made his entrance after another uneventful ten minutes.

Nyom saw red for a foul on Vinicius and Real wasted little time in taking advantage. When Guler’s defensive pass found Mbappe with his back to goal, the French striker turned, took the ball into the area and smashed his shot past David Soria.

Mbappe, who has also scored five times in two Champions League games, and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois are the two players Alonso cannot miss this season, with Courtois denying Abu Kamara in extra time to deny Getafe an equalizer.

Before the leader starts against Barcelona, Real will host Juventus in the Champions League on Wednesday.
