Ladies Euro 2025: Germany is waiting for news about captain Giulia Gwinn’s newest knee injury

Germany was waiting for the news of the last knee injury of Captain Giulia Gwinn at the European Championship for Women on Saturday.

The 26-year-old Gwinn injured her knee and made a likely goal-saving tacking on Poland Captain Ewa Pajor during the 2-0 win of Germany on Friday. She had to be supported in tears from the field after she received hugs from teammates.

Gwinn, who previously had two cruciate ligament injuries, had to have an MRI in Zurich on Saturday to determine the extent of the injury. Gwinn missed the World Cup 2023 while recovering from the second cross injury.

«We all know the history of Giulia. We are all, all, who keep our fingers crossed that it is nothing so serious,» said Germany Vice captain Janina Minge. «We have to stand together as a team to stand with her and hope best.»

Jule Brand, who scored one goal and set up the other on Friday, said that Gwinn’s injury was a «shock for all of us. If Giuli is down, it’s never good because she always comes up immediately again.»

Gwinn tore the ACL in her right knee in a European qualification against Ireland in September 2020 and then suffered the same injury in her left knee while training with Germany in October 2022.

ACL injuries can vary in severity, but can mean no less than a year free if surgery is required. Already this year Germany -goalkeeper Sophia Winkler and midfielder Marie Müller cruciate ligament injuries.

Germany Lena Oberdorf, the teammate of Gwinn in Bayern Munich, did not make the team because she is still working back from her knee injury, almost a year ago in a victory over Austria. Bayern’s Carolin Simon missed the World Cup 2023 with the same injury.
