Lamine Yamal interview – Barca star recalls Real Madrid vs Barcelona debut before El Clasico

Lamine Yamal set several records before he turned 18 and now hopes to be remembered as a legend at Barcelona after becoming a mainstay in the first team.

“The youngest player, the youngest with an assist, the youngest debutant, the youngest in the national team, the youngest with an assist, the youngest debutant at the European Championship, in the semi-finals, in the final…

“Normally I don’t think about it much, but now that I say it out loud, yes, it’s a lot of things that really make you happy, and hopefully there will be more to come,” Yamal told La Liga in an interview.

Yamal will be one of the main stars to watch out for in Sunday’s El Clasico, with Barcelona looking to regain top spot in the table if they beat arch-rivals Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.

«Barça-Madrid has always been special for everyone. I think even in the league a lot of people watched those matches because a Barça-Madrid – no matter the level, no matter the sport – is always special,» Yamal added.

Yamal became the youngest debutant – at 16 years and 107 days – for Barcelona in El Clásico two years ago when he came off the bench to replace João Cancelo in a 1-2 defeat.

«I had honestly never been really nervous before a match. But when I stepped onto the field, I saw the faces of the opponents, I realized that they were very good, and that I would be there too,» Yamal remembers.

“I felt a little nervous going in, but then I forgot everything.”

Madrid eventually became one of his favorite opponents: the Spaniard has more goal contributions (3G, 2A in seven games) against the 15-time Champions League winners than any other team. He helped defeat his party The whites twice in finals, in the Spanish Super Cup and the Copa del Rey.

«Of course I would like to be remembered at Barca as a legend; the club gave me everything. Ultimately my life depends on football and on Barca, but it is still always with me,» added Yamal.
