Leagues Cup 2025: Messi Bags Two Assists while Inter Miami Atlas beats 2-1

Lionel Messi had two assists, including one in the last seconds of the game, to help Inter Miami on Atlas 2-1 lift in their Leagues Cup opener on Wednesday evening.

It was Messi’s first game back, because he and teammate Jordi Alba were suspended one match of Major League Soccer for skipping his All-Star match. He joined Marcelo Weigandt for the winning score in the last minute of the stop time.

Messi also helped with the goal of Telasco Segovia that opened the score in the 58th.

Rivaldo Lozano scored the equalizer for the Guadalajara club in the 82nd minute for Weigandt’s goal in the 96th minute, which had to be attached by VAR after he was originally ruled outside.

That meant five assists in July for Messi, which was named the Major League Soccer Player of the Month after eight goals and Miami helped 4-1-1 in competition game.

Both parties had their chances during a Chippy first half, although neither could end. Miami goalkeeper Rocco Ríos Novo had three saves in the first half, including one in which he slid Eduardo Aguirre on a header to the back post. Argentinian midfielder Rodrigo de Paul made his Inter Miami debut. De Paul, the national teammate of Messi, officially signed with the club last week.
