While Neel Gap was in ruin, our reliable transport transport driver said Skully the pond where the families of Canadian geese floated. He compared us to the spongy Gray Goslings with us flying through hikers. I found the very precise comparison. Just as babies’s geese were discovering their lives, so we were discovering life along the way.
Neel Gap, the only place where the path crosses a building!
The first week on the path is full of news for any hiker. First Bear Hang, First Cathole Dug, First Privy Usage, First Trail Magic, First Slackpack (day walking along the path without his entire night team), and so on. A great first of which many of us talk before and then was our first replenishment. With my lightened food bag, I walked through the mountain crossings in search of snacks and meals that I could desire during the next few days. I turned back after return, doubting my choices and dragging articles in my hands. Most of us regret the weight of our food bags after the refueling day. We had overloaded due to the fear of running out of food and not having activated our hunger for hikers.
I acquired my first ampoule, next to my big toe. As I suspected, the Hoke Speedgoat 6 in width was not yet wide enough for my feet. (He took approximately one month of hitting me daily before the blister was cured and an insensitive took his place. By then, the tape had begun to take off my skin not open in layers!)

Cinnerime in Muskrat Creek Shelter
We made our first friends on the path and some even decided to walk together as a tram (Path + Family) immediately. I met Gansett Girl while he was loose with the help of the clouds above and discovered that we had a similar hiking rhythm. It was very nice to pass the miles in good conversation and company. Spring lets us know that it still had control over the weather and we arrived at Woody Gap in snow gusts!
As someone who walks for a smaller budget, I decided to ask if the shelters offered work for stay every time I take a zero. This is double for me, since I want to help in a bigger way than just pay my bill when I leave. If the shelters do not offer this, I will still volunteer because I am not the best to be sitting on my day off! I could do my first stay in the clouds and enjoyed the sunny afternoon moving cut branches in the burns battery while the resident kitty, Blaze, reviewed my work.
In Hiawassee, I met my first path of path. She opens her home to hikers who need a place to stay and spent two cozy nights there. My mind was anxious to press for a two -digit mile day, but my cramping legs said otherwise. All shelters in the area were completely reserved, so it really helped me in a turnover. The silent respite provided was just what I needed to continue putting my feet under me, since I adapted to how it would look the next months for me.
Soon, the novelties of many of these first would disappear, but I often remember that those who are rooted in the generosity of the community of trails never take for granted. It appears when you do not expect it, a friendly offer that can be as simple as a shared or as large snack as a free trip to the city when you are sick. Most of these people have walked before, but I have already met some who simply live nearby and have heard of the path of the Appalaches through a neighbor. Being able to experience this first hand has been moving and curative.
