Leicester City were deducted six points for breaching Premier League financial rules


Leicester City has been awarded six points after an independent committee ruled the club had breached Premier League financial rules.

The sanction sees the Foxes drop in the Championship, leaving them outside the relegation places only on goal difference after Thursday’s decision. The sentence follows a lengthy legal process, which saw Leicester’s case heard by a panel in November. See also: source 1. The club was ruled to have breached the Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) during the 2023-2024 season, when the club competed in the second tier.

After the Premier League confirmed the allegations in May, Leicester were also cited for failing to submit their annual accounts by the December 31 deadline. An additional charge of failure to comply with the obligation to provide full, complete and timely cooperation with the league during the investigation was added.

That appeal panel concluded that the Premier League had no jurisdiction to impose a sanction because the club had already been relegated to the Championship by the end of the relevant accounting period on 30 June 2023.

During the three-year review cycle ending June 30, 2024, Leicester recorded combined losses of more than £200 million. Under PSR guidelines, clubs are allowed to make losses of up to £83 million during that period, subject to certain adjustments.
