Liverpool manager Arne Slot is not happy with the Premier League’s focus on set pieces

Liverpool manager Arne Slot says he no longer finds most Premier League matches a pleasure to watch as the ‘new reality’ of set-piece goals dominates the competition.

League leaders Arsenal have specialized in efficient set-piece scoring this season, with both goals coming from corners in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Chelsea. Slot’s Liverpool scored three times from corners in a 5-2 win over West Ham United the day before.

«Do I like it? My football heart doesn’t like it. Now most of the matches I see in the Premier League are not fun for me to watch,» Slot said on Monday ahead of Liverpool’s fifth-place match against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Slot said set pieces are one of the reasons the Premier League has ‘so much competitiveness’, with smaller teams able to cause big upsets.

In England ‘you can almost hit a goalkeeper in the face’ and the referee will still play, Slot argued.

“Maybe in five or 10 years things will change again, but I wouldn’t be surprised if you go to an under-16s game somewhere, Sunday League football, and you see teams completely focused on set pieces,” Slot said. “That is the new reality.”

Liverpool visit Wolverhampton twice this week, with an FA Cup match scheduled for Friday, before another away match against Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League on March 10.

Slot said playmaker Florian Wirtz will miss both Wolverhampton games due to a back injury and predicted he would return to action next week.
