Liverpool pays the penalty, while Burnley’s draw extends the winless streak

A Florian Wirtz goal was canceled out by Marcus Edwards as Liverpool spoiled a missed penalty from Dominik Szoboszlai in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with lowly Burnley, the home side’s fourth straight Premier League stalemate.

Liverpool dominated possession and had 11 shots on target while Burnley had one, but the defending champions are now seven points below the top three.

Waves of attacks trapped Burnley’s backline in the 19th deep into the first half and Liverpool could have taken the lead when Cody Gakpo was brought down by Florentino Luis, but Szoboszlai’s penalty rattled the crossbar.

However, the sustained pressure paid off in the 42nd minute, when Hugo Ekitike ran into the penalty area and his shot from close range bounced off the keeper before reaching Curtis Jones, who set up Wirtz to finish, as the German scored his fourth goal in his last six appearances.

Liverpool almost doubled their lead in the 55th minute when Wirtz found Gakpo, who beat the keeper but was denied by Bashir Humphreys’ goal-line clearance.

Sloppy defending almost cost the hosts the lead, with ‍Ibrahima Konate almost scoring an own goal when trying to intercept an Edwards cross, but keeper Alisson Becker waved it away.

However, the home fans’ relief was short-lived as Burnley leveled after 65 minutes when Edwards broke into the penalty area chasing a through ball and fired towards the goal line. Liverpool pushed forward and Ekitike found the net in the 77th minute with a close-range finish, but the strike was ruled out for offside and the ball had also struck the French striker’s hand.
