Liverpool withdraws the Jersey number of Diogo Jota to ensure that he has never been forgotten


Liverpool worn the number 20 shirt by Diogo Jota retired after his death in a car accident last week.

28-year-old Jota died with his brother Andre Silva, also a football player, near the northwestern city of Zamora, Spain.

On Friday, Liverpool said that his number would retire at all levels of the club, including the ladies team and the Academy.

«It was the song he was wearing with pride and distinction, so we led countless victories in the process – and Diogo Jota will forever be the number 20 of Liverpool Football Club,» said the Premier League club in a statement.

Jota had just helped the most successful season of his career completed liverpool with a record-similar 20th English league title and winning the UEFA Nations League with Portugal.

In total he played 182 games for Liverpool and scored 65 goals, while he won the FA Cup and English League Cup together with the Premier League.

Liverpool said it made the decision after consultation with his family.

«As a club, we were all sharply aware of the sentiment of our supporters and we felt exactly in the same way,» says Michael Edwards, CEO of Football for Liverpool’s owner Fenway Sports. “I believe that this is the first time in the history of Liverpool Football Club that such an honor has been given to an individual. That is why we can say that this is a unique tribute to a unique great person.

«By retiring this team, we make it forever and therefore never forgotten.»

Players from Liverpool and Portugal came to family and friends last weekend for the funeral of Jota and his brother. Flowers tribute was laid outside the club’s Anfield stage as part of an outpouring of grief after his death.
