In my last blog, I left off with my completion of the PCT! I was so focused when I hiked the AT that I knew very little about the PCT or any other trail! What I had learned along the way was that when I reached the rainbow ledges and saw Kathadin for the first time, it would not be my last ending!
When I finished my PCT climb, I started planning next year’s CDT. I had been doing big hikes every couple of years, but the thought of achieving the Triple Crown had me really focused! As we all know, we can make plans to our liking, but life can seriously ruin those plans! Some family health issues and my mother-in-law’s move caused me to escape the sweltering Florida summer to pack some bags in upstate New York. Between boxes, I would strap on my backpack and carry some of my Catskills favorites in my backpack. As I emerged from a rocky summit I encountered a summer storm. The rocks were very slippery and when I fell I knew there would be broken bones! In fact, my left ulna and radius took the brunt of the impact and didn’t fare very well! After a couple of x-rays, what I thought was confirmed and luckily, no surgery was necessary! As I drove back to Florida, I mentally calculated when the cast would come off so I could walk again.

A week after my cast came off, I was in Alabama starting the Pinhoti tour. I can’t say enough about this trail, the beauty, the grade, the trail community – it’s amazing! I got perfect fall colors like on the BMT! The weather was perfect! This 350 mile trail is truly a gem! The northern terminus ends at Benton McKaye, which I learned when I walked through there! I wasn’t SOBO on the BMT back to the AT, but a friend picked me up! After a short visit, I returned home!
I mean, back to the AT! I went SOBO on Helen! I wanted to add another 100 miles to the trip and hike to Amicalola Falls and the arch! I was excited at the prospect of seeing SOBO finish their hike, but I only saw section hikers and test hikers! The weather was great!

To ring in the New Year, I hiked the Foothills trail in the Carolinas where I was able to catch up with my friend Fresh Ground and spend time hiking with Murica from my AT Tramily and my friend Jingle.
Right after the Christmas break, my planning for the CDT began in earnest! To be continued…
Happy trails!
