Luxury refueling in the GDT

Reporting options

There are limited refueling options in the GDT compared to trails such as AT or even CDT. I decided to send me food in boxes to Bolton Creek, Field, Saskatchewan Crossing and Blueberry Creek Trail Head. There is a supermarket in Blairmore to about 3 miles from Coleman, where I will buy 6-7 days of food to get to Baulton Creek. Jasper also has a supermarket where I can buy food. I like to buy food along the way when I can, since it supports the local economy, And I can avoid buying foods that I have tired of my refueling of 45 lb.

Shipment

I decided not to take 45 pounds. of food with me on the plane. As I am lucky to walk with friends who live near the Canadian border and the beginning of the path on Watton, I can send them food. Why not send the boxes directly to Canada, could you ask? First, it would be a expensive and second madness, the customs and the recent Canadian postal strike promises a unreliable delivery.

Three Canadian flat rate boxes

The plan is to pack food in Canadian flat rate boxes that have a limit of 11 pounds, drive through the border and send the food. This should minimize unreliable delivery, however, the total cost can be almost the same. I suppose that each snickers bar will cost around $ 0.75 only on the shipment.

Luxury support

Maps has a friend willing to meet with us in Coleman, Baulton Creek and Jasper with equipment and food. In general, a solo hiker, this is a luxury welcome and total. Entering sections F and G in September promises a hard and humid climate. I cannot describe how incredible the warmest and best team of the bad weather you may need. I have not yet met Map’s friend, but I already love him!

After Jasper, there are about 10-12 days of walking to return to Yellowhead Highway. Choose not carrying 20-25 pounds. From the food, an external one will bring food to the Blueberry lake about 130 miles from the road. For around $ 100, the food rises along an unpleasant path of 4WD and is left in a box of bears. Apart from the cost, this sounds great. However, the bears box is about 4 miles and 3000 ‘down! More fun type two.
