Mainoo is the future of Manchester United, says Amorim

Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo is yet to start a Premier League game this season and has been linked with a move in the January transfer window, but manager Ruben Amorim says the England midfielder is the club’s future.

Mainoo has played 12 games this season, including one in the League Cup, and will miss United’s match against Newcastle United later on Friday due to a calf injury.

Amorim said the 20-year-old will have to be patient, but he will get his chance in the team.

“Kobbie Mainoo gets the chance, he has plenty of time,” Amorim told reporters on Thursday.

“He played in different positions and we talk about Casemiro’s position, he can fill that position.

“If you play with three (in midfield), he can – like we played in the last game – play in Mason Mount’s position in this match, he can play there.

«So in the future he will be the future of Manchester United. That’s my feeling.»

“So you just have to wait for every opportunity and in two days everything can change in football.”

With United’s squad missing several players due to injury and the Africa Cup of Nations, Amorim said it would be difficult to accept a player’s request to leave in January.

«It will be difficult for anyone to leave the club if we don’t get a substitution,» the Portuguese said.

«We’re falling short. Even with the full team, we’re falling short of anything that could happen.»

Manchester United are seventh in the league with 26 points from 17 games.
