Man City case ‘damaging’ for Premier League, says La Liga chief

The lengthy disciplinary case involving Manchester City has been “damaging” for the Premier League, according to La Liga president Javier Tebas.

English giants City were accused of more than 100 alleged breaches of the league’s financial rules in February 2023, with the club strongly denying all charges.

But more than three years later, no verdict has been made public, while an independent commission heard the case between September and December 2024.

Tebas said his problem was not so much the time taken to reach a ruling, but rather that the lengthy process had created «uncertainty» regarding the application of the rules, with other clubs being charged and sanctioned for rule violations within the same period.

“I understand it is a failure of governance – this happened with Manchester City and other clubs watching and watching and listening,” Tebas said during a media briefing at the Financial Times Business of Football Summit in London on Thursday.

«(Other clubs get) fines and points deductions, and that’s fine if you don’t follow the rules. But Manchester City has impunity. I speak to a lot of Premier League clubs, and the majority don’t understand this either. That makes the institution weaker.»

The Spanish football chief added: «It’s not just the delay, it’s the general situation. If you have to have rules for financial fair play in a great institution like the Premier League, you have to have a lot of legal certainty in the competition and between the clubs.»

City has previously said it has an “extensive body of irrefutable evidence” to prove it did nothing wrong.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters was asked about the City case when he appeared at the same event later on Thursday.

“I can’t talk about it, I can’t talk about the timing of it,” he said.

Asked whether the case has prompted the Premier League to think about ways to ensure a faster process should a similar incident occur in the future, Masters said: «I just can’t comment. Temukan edc4 di sini. After three years of not commenting, I’m not going to start it now.»

«Other than that (specific case), every regulator wants their justice system to be efficient and work quickly. That’s about as far as I can go.»
