Man United beat Brighton 3-2 to keep WSL title challenge on track

Manchester United had to withstand a late charge to move ahead with a crucial 3-2 win over Brighton & Hove Albion in the Women’s Super League on Sunday, securing a fifth win of the season to stay in touch with the top two.

Chelsea remain top of the table with 19 points from seven games after the 2-0 win over London City Lionesses on Saturday, with Manchester City one point behind in second place after a 1-0 win over West Ham United, and Manchester United one point further back in third.

With the top two in imperious form, Manchester United had no room for error as they traveled to the south coast to take on Brighton, with Norway international Elisabeth Terland making it 1-0 ahead just before half-time.

Jess Park doubled the lead in the 58th minute before Fran Kirby pulled one back for the Seagulls, and the visitor had to fight hard to maintain the lead before Lisa Naalsund looked to have secured the three points when she made it 3-1 in the 89th minute.

The drama didn’t end there though and Brighton pulled another goal back with a superb chipped finish from Kiko Seike two minutes into stoppage time, but despite a late surge they could not find an equalizer as United held on for the win.

There was also late drama in Birmingham, with Kelly Gago scoring an equalizer deep into second-half stoppage time to snatch a 3-3 draw for Everton at Aston Villa.

Swedish striker Stina Blackstenius scored twice for Arsenal to comfortably beat Leicester City 4-1, but remains in fifth place behind north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, who defeated Liverpool 2-1 in a match with over 20 minutes of stoppage time after Liverpool’s Mia Enderby suffered a head injury late in the match.

The result leaves the Merseysiders second from bottom of the 12-team league and still looking for their first point of the season, ahead of West Ham on goal difference.
