Manchester United cannot rush to appoint the next manager: Carrick

Michael Carrick said Manchester United should not rush into choosing a permanent new manager after insisting nothing has changed in his own job prospects.

Carrick took over as United’s interim manager until the end of the season after Ruben Amorim was sacked in January.

The former United midfielder has breathed new life into his troubled club with three consecutive wins against Manchester City, Arsenal and Fulham, lifting the club to fourth in the Premier League.

Ahead of Saturday’s match against Tottenham, the 44-year-old was adamant that United should not make a quick decision on their next manager after so many failed appointments in recent years.

«Nothing has changed, no, to be honest. It won’t change what I do, or how I think about it. I think I’m fully aware of the role I play here and the responsibility I have,» he told reporters.

«We want to be successful. I want the club to be successful even after the end of the season. If that is me, if that is anyone else at this stage, then I have no control over that and we will see what happens.»

«If they changed that, there’s something wrong. It can’t be that obvious either way, whether it’s actually good or whether there are some issues we need to fix. It’s really steady progress.»

Carrick was chosen to take charge for the remainder of the season after United also spoke to former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and another of the club’s former strikers, Ruud van Nistelrooy, about the caretaker post.

Back at Old Trafford, where he won the Premier League and Champions League as a player for 12 years, Carrick admitted he relished the opportunity after being sacked by second division side Middlesbrough last year.

«I love what I do. I’m here, you know,» he said, «I feel at home here, but I completely understand the situation, so I don’t get too carried away.»
