Former India coach Manolo Marquez said that although he and the All India Football Federation were mutually separated in July, he had offered his resignation months ago.
«I resigned in April, but they asked me to take the transfer star of June,» Marquez said Spanish outlet Marking in an interview.
«I didn’t want to leave because of the poor results. In fact, they tried to convince me to stay for a month. It seems that they have now accepted my first decision.»
Marquez, who came to India as head coach of Hyderabad FC in 2020, helped the side with the Indian Super League two years later. In June 2024 he succeeded Igor -Stimac as head coach of the men’s team, but was unable to send the side to a competitive victory in his a year that was in charge.
«Coaching the Indian national team was the dream of my life, but if you see that all teams do not play according to the same rules, you think this is not the place for you,» Marquez said.
Under Marquez, India lost the Intercontinental Cup, Drew and each lost three games and won a friendly one 3-0 win against the Maldives.
«I acknowledge that I did things wrong, but if the results had improved, I would probably still be in the position,» said the Spaniard, who also led FC Goa to the Super Cup title last season.
His last match was a road game against Hong Kong, who lost India 0-1 after the visitors had converted from the place in the second stop time.
«Three days before the game against Hong Kong, all players knew it would be my last game with the national team. It is not easy for a player who arrives for three weeks to sit in a team that you know the coach will leave,» said Marquez.
