Mason Mount and Bruno Fernandes back in charge for Manchester United after Amorim’s dismissal

Manchester United will have Mason Mount and captain Bruno Fernandes available for Wednesday’s Premier League match against Burnley – an immediate boost for newly appointed interim manager Darren Fletcher.

In his first pre-match press conference since replacing sacked head coach Ruben Amorim on Monday, Fletcher said the pair were fit and should be back in the squad after returning from injury.

Fernandes suffered a hamstring injury before Christmas, while Mount was injured the day after. Both missed Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Leeds United, although Fletcher said both had pushed to play.

“They will be playing on controlled minutes and restricted minutes because they have only just returned to training, so that is good news, especially because they are players who have been in good form,” he added.

“The fact that they are available for selection is obviously great news for me, the players, the club and the fans.”

Former midfielder Fletcher, a United stalwart with 342 appearances for the club and most recently coach of the under-18s squad, said he was focused on the game against Burnley and not the longer term.

«I’ve had a conversation and the focus is on this match and then we’ll talk after the match,» he said of the talks with the club.

«To be honest, it’s not something I’ve thought about. I’m concentrating on Burnley. I think that discussion is for after the game,» he added when asked if he wanted to stay longer and earn the manager’s job full-time.

«It all happened so quickly, all my concentration, effort and thoughts are on Burnley. I know that sounds like a general answer but it is what it is,» the Scot added.

Fletcher said it felt “surreal” to be in charge.

«It’s a tremendous honor to be in charge of a Manchester United team. I never thought in my wildest dreams that this could possibly happen,» he said.

“It’s a great honor to lead the team and something I’m very proud of, not in the circumstances I expected it to happen in, so that’s obviously something that doesn’t come so easily to me.

“But I just have to remember that I have a job to do and I have to lead the team tomorrow and think of the great honor and pride that will bring me.”
