Michael Carrick has challenged Manchester United to match the standards they set in a dominant 2-0 win over local rivals Manchester City on Saturday, giving him a dream start to his reign as interim boss.
The Red Devils were inspired by the change in management as goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu dealt a huge blow to City’s Premier League title chase.
United also had three goals disallowed for marginal offside and were denied by a series of fine saves from City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
«Great start. There’s no way around that,» Carrick said. “The boys were fantastic.”

Just a second win in eight games in all competitions moved United to fourth in the table ahead of the later kick-off.
Carrick’s men face another tough test when they travel to league leaders Arsenal next week, but this season it has often been against weaker teams that they have disappointed. They failed to beat Wolves, Bournemouth, West Ham and Everton at home under Ruben Amorim, who was sacked earlier this month.
“Consistency is the key to any success,” Carrick said. “If you can find that, then you have a winner.
«That’s our challenge – we have to find a way to do that. Big next week of course, still a tough one, but looking at today we have a good foundation.»
