Missing hiker found dead on Appalachian Trail in Georgia

TO A 23-year-old Missouri man named Julian Horton was found dead on the Appalachian Trail in Fannin County, Georgia, not far north of Springer Mountain, on Wednesday. Fannin County Coroner Becky Callihan told The Trek that the death was ruled a suicide.

Horton had last been seen in person by his family on March 3, according to a news release from the Boone County, MO Sheriff’s Office, and they became concerned for his well-being, prompting authorities to send alerts to phones along the AT in north Georgia on Wednesday around 11 a.m. Authorities eventually located him by pinging his cell phone.

Callihan told local radio station WJRB that Horton had left “disturbing notes” for his mother in Missouri and that more notes were found at the death scene.
