The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Disciplinary and Ethics Committee has condemned Indian Super League (ISL) champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant for refusing to travel for the group stage match against Sepahan SC in September.
The confederation has disqualified the club “from participating in the next AFC club competition for which it would otherwise qualify in the next two (2) AFC club competition seasons (i.e. up to and including the 2027/28 season).”
In addition, Bagan has also been ordered to pay a hefty fine of at least US$100,729 for its decision, including US$50,729 for damages and losses claimed by the AFC and Foolad Mobarakeh Sepahan SC (IRN).
The decisions were made at the meeting of the AFC’s disciplinary and ethics committee on December 17.
The sanctions come after Bagan refused to travel to Iran for the AFC Champions League Two group stage match, citing the unavailability of visas for some of its foreign players, including strikers Jamie Mclaren and Jason Cummings.
Later, the confederation disqualified the club for ‘withdrawing’ from the tournament and disqualifying it from the campaign.
