Mohun Bagan SG sends letter to IFA after fans clash with police following win against United SC

Mohun Bagan Super Giant has written to the Indian Football Association (IFA) after several fans reported a clash with police following the IFA Shield match against United Sports Club at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan on Wednesday.

What happened?

Mohun Bagan fans protested against the club’s management in light of the team’s withdrawal from the AFC Champions League Two, where it refused to travel to Iran for the match against Sepahan SC.

During the IFA Shield match, slogans were shouted against the management, including posters reading ‘The spine is not for sale’ in Bengali. The protest continued after the match, reportedly leading to escalating tensions between the fans and security (Kolkata Police) in and around the stadium.

What did the letter say?

“We write to express our deep concern over the unfortunate incidents that occurred after today’s match involving Mohun Bagan Super Giant.

«It is deeply disturbing that what started as a moment of celebration for our supporters has turned into a situation of unrest. Such events endanger the safety of players, officials and fans,» said the letter, addressed to the IFA general secretary.

“In light of this, we request an immediate report from the IFA and the organizing authorities regarding: the sequence of events leading to the unrest; the adequacy and deployment of security facilities during and after the match; the actions taken by the organizers once the situation escalated; the measures being planned to prevent such incidents in future matches.

«We urge the IFA to treat this matter with the utmost seriousness and provide us with a formal explanation as soon as possible. Ensuring the safety of players, officials and supporters remains our priority.»

Mohun Bagan defeated United Sports Club 2-0 to reach the IFA Shield final, where they will meet arch-rivals East Bengal on October 18.
