New Zealand, which is in the World Cup, beat Chile for its first victory over the South American team


New Zealand defeated ten-man Chile 4-1 in Auckland on Monday in its final home match before the World Cup. It was the team’s first ever win against South American opposition.

Fellow World Cup qualifier Cape Verde earlier won a penalty shootout against Finland at Auckland’s Eden Park after drawing the match 1-1.

Chile beat Cape Verde 4-2 on Friday but started poorly against the hosts, with Dario Osorio sent off in the 27th minute after receiving two yellow cards in quick succession.

The All Whites scored straight away, with Kosta Barbarouses volleying home from a corner in the 31st minute, before Elijah Just added a second in the 40th minute.

It was 3-0 in the 60th minute when Jesse Randall scored from close range, and a fourth was fired in by substitute Ben Waine in the 71st minute.

Gonzalo Tapia scored a consolation for Chile in the 83rd minute after a quick counter-attack.

New Zealand will face Belgium, Iran and Egypt in the group stages in North America this summer.

Cape Verde came from a goal behind to draw 1–1 against Finland before winning the penalty shootout.

Finland recorded a 2–0 win over New Zealand and went into halftime with the lead, with Naatan Skytta scoring with the final kick of the half df6JSLs.

Cape Verde, who will make their World Cup debut in June, hit back from a corner in the 67th minute after Sidny Cabral found Kelvin Pires at the far post to head home.

Marcio Rosa made two saves in the penalty shootout to secure the win for Cape Verde.

Cape Verde will play against Spain, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay at the World Cup.
