Benfica fired coach Bruno Lage after Tuesday’s defeat against Minnow Qarabag against Minnow Qarabag, the club announced, whereby some media claimed that Jose Mourinho is in line to take over.
Mourinho actually started his coaching career at Benfica, but stopped after just two and a half months before he made his name in the Arch -Rival of the Lisbon Giant, Porto.
He was fired by Fenerbahce last month after just over a year after the elimination of the Turkish side of the qualification of the Champions League, ironically in the hands of Benfica.

«We have just reached an agreement with Bruno Lage, who today leaves his position as Benfica coach,» former midfielder Rui Costa, the President of the Club, told reporters at the end of Tuesday.
Former Wolverhampton Wanderers -Baas Lage, who was with Benfica in his second spell, was already under pressure after his team dropped his first competition points of the season to Santa Clara at the weekend.
Costa said Benfica expected his new coach to have on time for Saturday’s competition with AVS.

The previous spell of Mourinho at Benfica only lasted 11 games at the back 2000, but when he, after he had an impression on Uniao de Leiria, came to Porto and it led to back-to-back League titles and the Champions League crown in 2004.
That set him on his way to a hugely successful career coaching from Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid before his fortunes started diving after he joined Manchester United in 2016.
Lage won the Portuguese Primeira Liga in 2019 in his first enchantment at Benfica, while last season he led it to the Portuguese Cup success.
