Bayern Munich – helped by two record-breaking own goals from VfL Wolfsburg and two from Player of the Match Michael Olise – demolished the visiting side 1-8 in the Bundesliga on Sunday to extend their lead at the top when the competition resumed after the winter break.
The reigning champions, who are unbeaten in the league this season, are on 44 points, 11 ahead of second-placed Borussia Dortmund. With one match to go, RB Leipzig is third with 29 points, the same as Bayer Leverkusen and VfB Stuttgart in fifth place.
«It’s not normal (for such a result), it’s not a given and we shouldn’t forget that,» Bayern coach Vincent Kompany said. «The first half really wasn’t easy. But I had the feeling that if they got a little tired we would create even more chances, and that’s exactly what happened in the second half.»
The hosts didn’t need long to take the lead when Luis Diaz’s fifth-minute cutback was converted into an own goal by Wolfsburg’s Kilian Fischer. It was the third league match in a row that Wolfsburg scored an own goal, setting a Bundesliga record.
However, the visiting team responded well, with Dzenan Pejcinovic completing a beautiful passing move that opened up Bayern’s defense and leveled the score in the 15th minute.
Diaz scored after half an hour, heading home Olise’s cross for his ninth league goal of the campaign to put the host side back in front. Olise is the best provider in the competition so far with nine assists.
The Frenchman then got on the scoresheet with a curling shot to score his eighth goal of the season before hapless Wolfsburg scored his fourth own goal in the last three league matches in the 53rd, with Moritz Jenz putting the ball into the net after an Olise cutback.
The hosts, who also hit the post with Olise in the 64th and scored a further two goals through substitute Raphael Guerreiro and Bundesliga top scorer Harry Kane in the space of 80 seconds, have never lost at home to Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga, having won 27 of 29 games and drawn two.
Olise capped his excellent performance in his 50th Bundesliga match for Bayern with his second goal of the night in the 76th, before substitute Leon Goretzka rifled the ball home from a tight angle in the 88th to complete the Bavarians’ biggest win over Wolfsburg.
