Another day zero. Being completely in the desert section made me feel much better about my chances of finishing the trail, so I figured I had a little time to relax and enjoy the area.

My parents and I weren’t really sure what to do in the Lancaster area, so we had sushi first before heading to the Antelope Valley Indian Museum. We discovered the museum just by randomly searching for things to do on Google Maps, and it turned out to be a good choice!

It was so crowded when we arrived that we had to park on the street and walk to the park area. This weekend turned out to be a fundraiser for an Indian organization. There were people from different tribes dancing, talking about their traditions and selling food. We didn’t expect this!

The dancers had beautiful clothes of all colors and materials, and people were invited to join. My knees were too sore for that, but I enjoyed some of the fried bread they were selling. We entered the museum for a while to protect ourselves from the heat. The museum was started by a collector of Indian artifacts (some of which were obtained in ways that would be illegal today), but California State Parks took over and has worked hard to make the museum more historically accurate and respectful. The art, design and creativity of the place were remarkable.

We left as the parties were coming to an end and returned to the hotel to relax for the rest of the day. Even though we hadn’t done much, I was still pretty tired. My parents had to leave the next afternoon, so we enjoyed the rest of our time together while we could.

And that’s a day in the life of a PCT SOBO hiker!
