PCT Sobo day 25 – 400 miles of nobles

Day 25

Home: Pond, Mile 391.4

END: TENTSITE, MILLA 413.6

Walked miles: 22.2 miles

I woke up with everything was cold and wet. That is the worst of a rainy day; It is not the rain at the time, necessarily, but the sequels and have to deal with wet clothes. Sun needed a few minutes and hot coffee to face the reality of putting socks and wet shoes, so I headed to the path a little in front of him.

The forest was fresh; A dense layer of clouds hovered on me. However, I began to climb and soon I found my cloud cover and looking down in the white cotton layer under me. The sun warmed my cold hands and Mount Rainier looked around the corner. It was such a magnificent view.

As much as I would like to enjoy the sun, the path was calling. While descending, I went to several nobles and hikers of several days. I was busy here! I stopped a couple of times for the brief breaks to wait for the sun, but it was too cold back under the cloud layer to have too long left. I had to keep moving.

Little by little, as the miles passed, the sun came out, the air heated and a soft light filtered through the trees. The sun was in full validity at a road crossing, so I took the opportunity to launch a drying party. In other words, I put all my wet items to dry in the sun and waited for the sun to be and join. After a few moments, he appeared from the forest and joined the party with his own humid team.

He and I was not in a hurry to move, but again, the pull of the path made me start. We decided that lunch would be in 3.5 miles, so we didn’t have too much time to go before we could rest again. But first, we had a milestone to celebrate. 400 miles, whooo !!! Sun makes a kilometer sign with sticks every hundred miles, so we take an choice with a 400 wood. Not too much in poor condition!

After lunch, it was time to get to the Alpina area of Mount Adams. It was very gradual but also very long. As I’m slow in the uphill, Sun came forward to me. Just before reaching it, I stopped on the way for a quick breath. Suddenly, I heard this loud section noise, almost like those huge grasslands that fly and reverberate their wings. Looking around to see what was doing the noise, I found face to face with a hummingbird! He was alone there for a few seconds, but he was suspended in the air, looking at me from just 3 feet away. Wow!

Shortly after, I found Sun sitting in an expansive meadow and wild flowers. A small waterfall fed a winding stream that slept along the edge of the meadow. As usual, Sun wanted to enter, but managed to put only his feet. He frozen! In addition, there were mosquitoes everywhere, Ughhh.

The goal of tonight was to reach a camp with a beautiful view of Mount Adams and the easy access to a transmission. And honestly, while we continued walking, there were so many impressive places to choose from. I was a little worried that we were already spending some of the best places. But, after a stream crossing and an emergency snack to keep the last 1.5 miles, we finally succeeded.

And we weren’t the only ones who wanted a perfect place for the photo. Around 7 nobles were already prepared to camp there, their tents in a circle in «cars train formation». Fortunately, the site was more than large enough to accommodate us and the other 3 nobles that appeared later that night.

We all have dinner together and talked about our experiences so far. One thing I will say is that nobles is a much more common and outgoing group than sobos. Maybe it is because they were younger, but this was the first time on the PCT so far, where the talk was without stopping all night. As introverted, I was even more satisfied with my decision to go to Sobo after my first night camping with nobles. Finally, everyone returned to their stores and I saw how Mount Adams went from pink to a great blue.
