PCT SOBO DAY 53 – Entering my last state

Day 53

Home: Mt. Ashland Campground, Mile 944.3

End: stealthy, mile 972.1

Walked miles: 27.8 miles

When I woke up, the morning was fresh and still. Last night, a deer ran, turning off and trampling my tent. I tried to scare him, but it was very persistent. You don’t have to say that I was in the middle of the night. Trying to make the most of the situation, I put on my glasses, I got out of my store and amazed the sky. There were innumerable stars sparkling in the infinite black sky! It was really a show to see.

After returning to bed and waking up, I ate breakfast and then started on my way. Today I would arrive in California! 2 states below, 1 (Big One) to go! The morning walk was pleasantly idyllic. Wild flowers aligned on the path and the sun was not yet too hot. After just a couple of miles, I found the magic of the path! A refrigerator full of Shasta soft drinks along with 2 beach chairs invited me to sit and have a sip while enjoying the morning. Two nobles appeared shortly after, so we share our stories of paths and change the advice for our respective nearby sections.

While I continued walking, I fell more and fell in love with this section. I enjoyed views and open of the valleys and mountains around me. Sometimes, deep yellow wild flowers splashed the slopes, while in others it was surrounded by dusty and rocky terrain. This section had many contrasts, but everything was beautiful.

Just after lunchtime, a white work truck passed by me on a forest service road. Just when he was greeting «Goodbye», the driver shot out his window. «Do you want water?» It was a very hot day, so, of course, I could not reject it. He left the truck, climbed into the bed of the truck and dug in his refrigerator. «Or would you like this instead?» An ice cream gatorade came out and with her a big smile of my face. «That sure!» With a laugh, I gave me the Gatorade and, after thank you very much, I continued on my way. That is my favorite type of trail magic, of the type that is spontaneous and less expected.

Happy drinking my gatorade, I descended for a few miles before reaching my great milestone: the border of Oregon/California! There was a Nobo hiker hanging there, so we talked a little while I took my photos. Looking at the trail record, I could see the same sobs ahead that had been there for a while.

In continued. A couple of miles before my store site, I picked up some water and then tried to look for the perfect place. As I approached at sunset, the place I chose a little wind, but it had a pretty beautiful view. After dinner, the sky was dark and there was nothing left to sleep.

And that is a day in the life of a PCT Sobo hiker!
